In 1947, he left his family in Italy and crossed the Atlantic Ocean by ship sailing into Ellis Island. He spoke only Italian and had less than $5 in his pocket. While wandering the streets of New York, Al, God-incidentally, met Fr. Brady of Our Lady of Mercy Church, East Greenwich. Together they rode to East Greenwich where he would live with his Godmother, Maria Ambolosi, for seven years. Always a hard worker, Al first found work digging ditches. Later, he took a job as chief machine fixer for the Textron Company.
