Al graduated from New England Tech in 1959 with a degree in
Electronics. From 1960 to 2000, Al was employed at the main
post office in Providence. During that period, while
working as an Electronic Technician, he received a
commendation for the modification of a sophisticated piece
of mail processing equipment which the manufacturer and
outside engineers said could not be accomplished. Al
modified the machine to detect and cancel a postage stamp
at any of the four possible corners. This effort extended
the utility of the machine by several years. Al reluctantly
retired from the post office at age 74.
During his lifetime, he also had many part time jobs.
Holding a Master Electrician license, he worked evenings
and weekends doing many residential electrical wiring and
repair jobs and fixing television sets and other
appliances. His insatiable curiosity for how things worked,
led to his fixing everything himself. He never called a
repairman. If Al did not know how to fix something, he
would simply go to the library and get a book. Then he
would come home and fix whatever was
broken.
